The modern beer, as we know beer today, was born in the Middle Ages. German monks were the main brewers during this time and there was a brewery in every monastery. The monks spent a lot of time improving brewing methods and discovered that hops as a bittering and flavoring agent both improved the taste and extended the beer’s shelf life.
